Speed and GPS
Why is GoMeter’s speed different from my car’s speedometer?
Car speedometers are built never to show less than your real speed, so most of them read a few percent high. GoMeter calculates speed from GPS, which is usually closer to your actual speed. A small difference is normal.
Why does the speed jump around or drop to zero?
GPS needs a clear view of the sky. Accuracy drops in tunnels, between tall buildings, under dense trees, indoors, and in some cars with heated or metal-coated windshields.
The GPS bar at the top shows the current signal quality and accuracy, for example GPS Signal: Good (±5m). A smaller number means a more accurate reading.
It keeps saying “Searching for GPS satellites…”
- Go outside and keep the phone still for a moment. The first fix can take up to a minute, especially after a long time without GPS or after traveling far.
- Make sure location is turned on. iPhone: Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services. Android: Settings › Location.
- Make sure GoMeter is allowed to use your precise location.
Does GoMeter work without internet or mobile data?
Yes. Speed, tracking and trip history all work offline. GoMeter uses only your phone’s GPS.
How accurate is the elevation?
Elevation comes from GPS, which is less precise vertically than horizontally, so expect differences of several meters. If your phone didn’t report altitude during a trip, the trip shows Elevation data not available for this trip.
Tracking in the background
Does tracking continue when the screen is off or I switch apps?
Yes.
- iPhone: GoMeter keeps tracking in the background and shows your speed on the Lock Screen and, on iPhones that have one, in the Dynamic Island. iOS shows a location indicator in the status bar while tracking.
- Android: GoMeter shows a notification while tracking, with Pause, Resume and Finish buttons.
I don’t see my speed on the Lock Screen (iPhone)
- Open Settings › GoMeter and turn on Live Activities.
- Open Settings › Face ID & Passcode and make sure Live Activities is allowed when the phone is locked.
- Make sure tracking has started. The Live Activity appears only while a trip is being tracked.
Tracking stops when the app is in the background (Android)
Some phones close background apps to save battery. To keep GoMeter running:
- Allow notifications for GoMeter, so the tracking notification can be shown.
- Open Settings › Apps › GoMeter › Battery and choose Unrestricted.
- On Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus and some other brands, there may be extra battery settings. dontkillmyapp.com has step-by-step guides for each brand.
Does GoMeter drain my battery?
High-accuracy GPS uses more power than most apps. GoMeter uses GPS only while the app is open on screen or while you’re tracking a trip. When you’re done, tap Finish. For long trips, keep your phone on a charger.
Trips and history
Why wasn’t my trip saved?
If you finish a trip before moving a few meters, GoMeter doesn’t save it and shows Trip too short to save.
What’s the difference between Finish and Reset?
Finish saves the trip to your history. Reset discards the current trip after you confirm it.
How do I name a trip?
Open the trip from Trip history and tap Add a trip name… at the top.
How do I delete a trip?
Open the trip, tap the menu in the top corner and choose Delete trip. Deleted trips can’t be restored.
How do I zoom into the speed or elevation chart?
Pinch to zoom into the chart. Double-tap to reset the zoom.
What do the trip stats mean?
- Distance: how far you traveled
- Duration: total time of the trip
- Moving time / Idle time: time spent moving and time spent standing still
- Max speed: highest speed during the trip
- Avg speed: average speed over the whole trip
- Moving avg: average speed while moving, without stops
- Avg pace: average time per kilometer or mile
- Elevation gain / loss: total climbing and total descent
- Net elevation: difference between the start and end altitude
- Points: number of GPS positions recorded
Can I export my trips or sync them between devices?
Not at the moment. Your trips are stored only on your phone. If you’d like this feature, let us know in Settings › Help improve GoMeter or at kimaladev@gmail.com.
Will my trips move to a new phone?
Trips are part of the app’s data on your phone. They move to a new phone only if your phone’s own backup or transfer (iCloud Backup or Quick Start on iPhone, Google backup on Android) includes app data.
Units and settings
How do I switch between km/h and mph?
Open Settings › Speed units and choose your unit. By default, GoMeter uses the unit that’s common in your region. You can also change units from the menu in a trip’s details.
Do distance and elevation follow the speed unit?
Yes. With mph, distances are shown in miles and elevation in feet. With km/h or m/s, distances are shown in kilometers (meters for short distances) and elevation in meters.
Privacy and your data
Is my location shared with anyone?
No. Your location is processed on your phone, and your trips are stored only on your phone. GoMeter has no accounts and doesn’t upload your trips anywhere.
What data does GoMeter collect?
GoMeter uses Google Firebase to collect anonymous crash reports and app usage statistics, which help us fix bugs and improve the app. Firebase is also used to send occasional announcements and updates as notifications, which you can turn off in your phone’s notification settings.
When you share an idea or report a problem in Settings › Help improve GoMeter, we receive your message together with your GoMeter version, phone model, iOS or Android version, language, time zone and the time you sent it, so we can understand and fix things. Your email is included only if you add it, so we can reply to you. Nothing is sent until you tap Send, and your location and trips are never included.
Read the Privacy Policy for details.
How do I delete my data?
Delete individual trips from their detail screen, or uninstall GoMeter to remove all trips and settings from your phone.
Don’t have GoMeter yet?
Free on iPhone and Android. No account needed.
